Tokyo Gendai 2024

July 4–7, 2024

MOU PROJECTS is pleased to present "Shimmering in the Victoria City," Lewis Lee's solo presentation at Tokyo Gendai 2024. Serving as a romantic, semi-imaginary exploration of the personal and collective narratives that interweave with Hong Kong's fluid history and urban landscape, the presentation weaves together a carefully curated collection of works to unfold a journey that transcends time, delving into the heart of Hong Kong's entwined past and present. The title itself, "Shimmering in the Victoria City," evokes vivid imagery of a city that, despite being engulfed in the whirling tides of change, retains a lustrous essence, one that reflects its complex past, historied heritage, and the indelible marks left by generations.

Each artwork in the presentation serves as a portal into different facets of Hong Kong's timeline. In Des Voeux Road West (2024), the eponymous street sign is vividly presented against the dusk sky. During the city's Japanese occupation (1941–45), the Chinese name of Des Voeux Road West was altered in honor of the reigning Japanese Emperor Shōwa, translating directly to Shōwa Road West in English. This work marks a subtle transformation of the cultural and physical urban landscapes of Hong Kong throughout the different eras.

Bathhouse for a Hundred Years (2024) transports the viewer to Sai Ying Pun, a district in west Hong Kong Island, capturing a vivid image of the historic Second Street Public Bathhouse, established by the colonial government in 1925 to combat poor sanitation after the 1894 Hong Kong plague. The work poignantly points to the communal spaces in the city's social fabric, revealing hidden stories and traces from Hong Kong's epidemic history. The detailed depiction of the bathhouse, with its pink exterior and Chinese signage, bridges personal memories with collective history, drawing a line through time to connect the past with the present.

The present-day narrative of Hong Kong is nuancedly captured in Typhoon Saola Crossing the Town (2024), a piece that reflects on the city's encounter with natural calamities. Depicting the arrival of super typhoon Saola in Hong Kong in 2023, the work paints trees and flags flying in the center of the storm. In complementing the exhibition's narrative about Hong Kong's story to be continued, the work reflects the ongoing changes faced by the city.

During the Journey series (2023) reveals the artist's intimate familial connection to Hong Kong, tracing his father's illegal immigration to the city in 1980. During the Journey IV, featuring a fruit tree, represents the story of his father surviving on wild fruit during his journey. This personal narrative intersects with the larger story of migration that is a part of Hong Kong's history.

Lastly, Under the Banyan Tree II (2024) merges the concept of time with the natural landscape, offering a deep reflection on history and memory. The imagery of the banyan tree, a subject of the artist's personal interest and a common sight on Hong Kong Island, symbolizes the city's resilience and historical transformations. Underscoring the intricate relationship between nature, time, and human progress, the banyan tree's enduring presence makes it a silent observer of countless pivotal moments in Hong Kong's history.

In Lee's works, the concept of "history" is not presented as a straightforward retelling of events, but rather as a layered and immersive experience that blurs the boundaries between fact and fiction, past and present, truth and myth, encapsulating personal memories, familial legacies, and the crafting of the collective memory of the city itself. On canvases, Lee infuses his paintings with fantastical elements that coexist with historical references, evoking a sense of familiarity and curiosity that rejects a traditional, linear understanding of history. This semi-fabricated "history" in the presentation contributes to a deeper exploration of the subjective and fluid nature of memory and storytelling. By weaving together elements of reality and imaginative embellishment, the artist prompts viewers to consider the ways in which personal and collective recollections of the past are shaped, distorted, and enriched over time.

About the Artist
Lewis Lee (b. 1998, Hong Kong) is an artist who navigates the artistic forms of painting, photography, and installation. Having spent his formative years between Hong Kong and Shenzhen, Lee constructs landscape and scenery in his works to establish connections between his personal experiences and the collective memories that have shaped his identity. Often delving into themes of heritage and cultural belonging, Lee responds to the lingering imprints of previous generations by researching and incorporating cultural motifs and symbols in his works. By revealing the fabrics of the past and intertwining them with his own imaginative expressions, he encourages audiences to contemplate their own place within the broader tapestry of history and to embrace the whimsy of existence.

Lee obtained his BA in Fine Arts from The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2023.

The artist currently lives and works in Hong Kong.
